Background of the Sand Tray
The idea of using sand trays goes back a long way and famous people who were involved with them were Margaret Lowenfield, Dora Kalff and notably Carl Jung. The trays are also known as Jungian Sand trays after Carl Jung, he was an early 20th century founder of analytical psychology introducing many of psychology's earliest concepts and clinical techniques. It was one of his pupils, Dora Kalff, who in the late 1920's developed the sand tray therapy.
Therapists use these trays when dealing with both children and adults with a variety of psychological issues; these participants are very often children who have encountered trauma and behavioural problems. The basic tools to involve the participant with the therapist are the sand tray, which includes dry or wet sand and also a variety of toys/objects which help the participant to relate to their current problems/dilemmas.
The tray is positioned in front of the client and accessible, allowing them to focus on telling a story with their chosen figures, similar to a child playing in a sandbox.
Although this website is fairly new, I have been making sandtrays for a number of years. It started when a counselling friend familiar with my practical skills asked me about making her a box as the only alternative was importing one from the USA for about $300. The finished product was a success and the rest is history. I previously advertised in the monthly BACP magazine e-Therapy Today.
